Treating Autism in Children

Psychological disorders are becoming an increased concern in the world due to their dire consequences on the normal functioning of an individual.  Autism is considered one of the psychological syndromes that is not restricted to a single impairment of a person, but rather it encompasses a range of disorders including sleep disturbances, anxiety, and hyperactive disorders as well as difficulties in social interactions, repetition of behavior patterns and hindrances in non-verbal communication (Tantam, 2012). There exist various types of autism depending upon the environmental and genetic influences. Usually, the symptoms of autism start appearing in early ages. Almost 1 in every 68 children is estimated to suffer from autism in the United States over the past 20 years (Carton, 2016). Girls are affected more by the autism than boys (“What Is Autism?”, n.d.). Moreover, some children are not diagnosed with autism at early stages, but as they move on in their life, they replicate the signs of autistic behavior (“Autism Spectrum Disorder”, 2016). Autism can be recognized at early stages when a child does not respond properly, faces difficulties to communicate his/her needs, avoids group games and repeatedly does the same thing.


The project intends to identify the ways that can help autistic children to live healthy lives. Countless efforts have been rendered to treate autism globally. The diagnosing procedure of autism consists of two phases including the general developmental check and the additional evaluation (“Autism Spectrum Disorder”, 2016). Any children who deviate from the standard behavior in the first stage are analyzed further by trained professionals.  Thinking, hearing, and communication skills are evaluated in the second stage. Even with the remarkable advancement in technology, no extraordinary medication has been invented for the treatment of autism. A widely accepted treatment for autism entails early intervention therapies (“How Is Autism treated?”, n.d.). Therapists extend the training to the parents teaching them on how to deal with their children to develop a stronger bond between parents and their children. However, this ill has continued to prevail and rob countless children of their joys.

The use of mobile apps developed for children with autism proves to be helpful in providing these children with better chances to develop socially and mentally. A number of experts recommend autism apps as they lessen the difficulties faced by an autistic kid in communicating with others (Carton, 2016; Lofland, n.d.). About 20-30% of the autistic children lack the ability to relate their needs and wants verbally to others. Such inability can cast harmful effects on the overall development of an individual. It acts as a barrier to their social interactions and educational access. The incorporation of smartphone apps in the treatment of autistic kids has received a good response as it has successfully allowed the sick kids to communicate their daily life needs to their parents, teachers, and friends.


As the communication technology is advancing rapidly, the children’s competency with them is also considerably increasing. The use of such technology is beneficial in both educational and communicational realms. The frustration caused by lack of communication skills in autistic children further intricates their treatment. With the use of smartphone apps, their understanding is aided with pictures that assist them to ask what they want (Carter, 2016). Autistic children have sound visual learning skills (“Teaching Reading to Students with Autism,” 2017). Their undivided attention to pictures allows them to overcome their inabilities that restrict their social interactions and simultaneously aids them to learn well in the classroom environment.

The use of portable devices is helpful as it is easily carried and is user-friendly. Autistic kids have complications associated with typing as it confuses them and creates additional barriers to communication (Lofland, n.d.). The touch screen phones are easier to use as they are operated by tapping and sliding instead of typing. These apps not only motivate the children but engage them thoroughly in learning new things. Such children also have auditory sensitivity and cannot respond well to sounds with high or varying intensities. So, the apps like Noise Down help to synchronize the sound intensity with their capacity to allow enhanced listening (Lofland, n.d.). Autistic kids also have trouble in sequencing things, which is catered by the use of smartphone apps as these apps simplify the tasks into fewer steps with visual representation. Hence, different apps play a significant role in treating children with autism.

Autistic kids can even learn to speak a language with the help of these apps. Special classrooms have been developed to aid their education (Carton, 2016). Teachers use various ways including smartphone apps and games to allow these children to overcome their communication barriers and benefit from education just like kids without this disorder.

Every individual has an equal right to live and enjoy the world with abundant colors and infinite joys. Unfortunately, autistic children face innumerable difficulties in living an ordinary life. Their reduced tendency to communicate deprives them of necessities of life. Many health issues are also accompanied with autism, which adds to the suffering of these individuals. Fortunately, science and technology have developed a number of apps today that can help these little kids to learn and communicate well. The incorporation of these apps in education and treatment has given hope to these children and allowed them to enjoy life in a broader perspective. The need of the hour is to dedicate more efforts to this cause so that the sufferers do not feel left alone.
